Every state has its own requirements when it comes to auto insurance. So, what are the auto insurance requirements in Georgia? These requirements are rooted in the type of insurance and how extensive the coverage is. Here are those requirements, as well as how to get the right coverage.

What Are the Types of Auto Insurance?

In general, car insurance is a legal contract protecting yourself and your loved ones in times when something happens to your vehicle.

Types of car insurance include:

  • Liability insurance (bodily injury, uninsured motorist, and property damage)
  • Physical damage (comprehensive and collision)
  • Medical payments
  • Towing
  • Rental reimbursement

What Do They Do?

Liability insurance protects you when others make claims against you for reasons such as bodily injury, which helps in cases when another person is harmed. Uninsured motorist coverage allows you to get reimbursed when there is an incident involving an uninsured driver.

Property damage liability insurance covers destruction to a vehicle, business, and the other party’s resulting income loss, and damage to other personal property such as mailboxes and fences. It will help cover any ongoing expenses resulting from property damage.

Physical damage insurance protects your own vehicle. Comprehensive covers you in instances such as theft, vandalism, and extreme weather. Collision protects your vehicle when it collides with another car or object.

Medical payments, towing, and rental reimbursement are optional additions to car insurance.

What Does Georgia Require?

In Georgia, you must have liability coverage at the least.

The liability coverage minimums are:

  • Bodily injury – $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident
  • Property Damage – $25,000 per incident

This is the only type of insurance you need unless your car is financed or leased by a leasing company or lender. In this case, you may also need to buy physical damage coverage. Different leasing companies and lenders have their own coverage minimums.

What Should I Know When Buying Car Insurance?

Buying car insurance requires assessing your options and having information available so that prospective insurance will be able to provide you with accurate rates.

Explore your options, and provide each prospective insurer with details such as your driving record, vehicle information such as the vehicle model and its mileage, your age and gender, and any information pertaining to previous car insurance you’ve had in the past.

Check with your state’s insurance department before signing on to a policy with an insurance company. If they’re not licensed by the state, you won’t have actual coverage – just money down the drain. It’s also illegal for unlicensed insurance agents or companies to issue car insurance policies.

You also need a clear understanding of the policy itself, including both parties’ responsibilities and rights.
